Australian Football League

The Australian Football League, formerly known as the Victorian Football League, was founded in October 1896, with the inaugural season taking place in 1897. It’s the only fully professional men’s competition of Aussie Rules football.

The league currently consists of 18 teams spread across five of Australian’s six states, with only Tasmania not represented. The Australian Football League has held matches in every Australian state, as well as in New Zealand and China to help promote the popularity of the sport.

The Australian Football League season currently consists of a 23-round regular season which runs during the Australian winter, March to September, and is formatted in a home-and-away series layout.

During the regular season, teams compete for the minor Premiership title, where the team with the best record after the home-and-away series will claim it.

The top eight teams during the regular season also make it through to the playoff rounds, where a four-round final series will take place, ending with the AFL Grand Final.

Port Adelaide claimed the most recent minor Premiership title with 56 points, joint with Brisbane Lions only to be separated on point percentage, which is the percentage difference between points for and point against.

Whichever Aussie Rules market you’re looking for during the Australian Football League season, we’ll have all the latest odds and markets available at Ladbrokes.

AFL Grand Final

The AFL Grand Final is the match that determines the premiers for that season’s Australian Football League which takes place annually, usually being contested at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The end of the finals series has taken place every year since 1898, with the exception of 1924. The match usually takes place in the afternoon of the last Saturday in September, with 125 Grand Finals being played to date.

There have only been three Grand Finals which have needed to go to a replay, and the club which wins the Grand Final wins the Premiership for that season, receiving the Australian Football League cup and Premiership flag.

Richmond Tigers are the most recent Premiership champions, beating Geelong Cats 12.9 (81) to 7.8 (50) at the Gabba, Brisbane Cricket Ground. It was the first Grand Final not to be held at the MCG since 1991, and the first in history to be held outside of the state of Victoria.

Carlton Blues are the most successful club in AFL Grand Final history, winning 16 Grand Finals in total. Essendon Bombers also have 16 titles to their name, although only 14 of their 16 Premiership titles have come from the AFL Grand Final.
